ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a commercial operation, based on the National Gypsy Moth Management Group, Inc., that blends science and business, and attempts to stimulate thoughts of developing a business in insect production. The process of starting and maintaining a business can extend personal and economic stability for the scientist. A basic understanding of business processes can improve most scientists' ability to manage any organization where budgets determine the limitations and success of programs. The market for gypsy moth parasites, as for radial tires, is dependent on the need for and competition to supply the product. An analysis of the gypsy moth parasite business based on risk and profit would not have the venture capitalists waiting in line; the risk is high and the profits are marginal. Gypsy moth parasites can be sold for a profit by increasing their value through utilization in research and management programs.
