ABSTRACT

An extensive survey of house fly and other filth flies, and their arthropod predators and parasites associated with broiler and caged-layer poultry production facilities was conducted in selected areas of Luzon, Philippines. About eleven species of common filth flies (Diptera) belonging to eight genera and four families (Muscidae, Calliphoridae, Sarcophagidae, and Stratiomyidae) were collected and identified. Eight species of parasitic Hymenoptera, belonging to six genera and three families (Pteromalidae, Chalcididae and Diapriidae) were found attacking pupae of Musca domestica L. and other filth flies. About thirty-five species of arthropod predators and scavengers, classified under fourteen families and five orders were recovered in poultry manure. The relative abundance of the common parasites and predators was also determined. Rates of predation on house fly eggs and first instar larvae were determined for selected insect predators.
