ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an opinion on the current role and future potential of biological control as a component of poultry Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in the United States, as influenced by several different factors that may govern its use. Cultural control of flies through manure management can also include rapid removal and disposal of the manure, before the flies can complete a generation. The current urbanization trend that began in California during the 1940's has continued to the present. The political structure of a given state and/or county can influence the potential impact of biological control in a poultry IPM system. In many states flies are considered public health threats and are governed by public health laws and regulations. The burgeoning egg industry in southern California is comingled with a an equally burgeoning human population, which has created a classic urban/agricultural interface.
