ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a country description for Zambia, beginning with a short summary of Zambia'a farming systems research program, and is followed by brief case studies that address the issue of gender and its relationship to recommendation domains and research priorities in three of Zambia's eight provinces. It deals with some tentative recommendations regarding the treatment of gender issues in the identification of recommendation domains and setting of research priorities for farming systems research in Zambia. In the case of Zambia, development efforts relating to women have moved increasingly from discussions at a general level to implementation in specific situations. Lusaka Province occupies the rural area adjacent to the national capital. It is characterised try a mix of cash cropping and subsistence farming. Like Luapula, Western Province is characterised by subsistence agriculture and by fishing in areas adjacent to the major rivers and swamps.
