ABSTRACT

Integration of management techniques for producing wildlife and livestock on the same ranges is a matter of increasing interest to landowners, primarily because of the economic value of wildlife. Economic values are the greatest incentive for the landowner to produce wildlife for the public interest. Most ranches have wildlife of one species or another that can be marketed through commercial or fee hunting. Thus, some compromises often must be made between good- to excellent-condition range classes for livestock and somewhat lower condition range classes for wildlife. In most range sites, grazing by domestic livestock is essential to management of vegetation for wildlife. Many grasses, including the Panicums and Paspalums, have large seeds, and these should be used when forage and seeds for livestock and wildlife are considered. The provision of food, water, and cover in wildlife habitats on rangelands is the primary purpose or goal of management.
