ABSTRACT

The Brahman breed has a unique position and acceptance in the beef industry of the US Probably more is known about the breed and its utility than many Bos taurus breeds, yet it remains a mysterious unknown to many cattlemen. The Brahman breed is American and a special symposium reviewed its utility at the 1979 Southern Section Meetings of the American Society of Animal Science. The Brahman breed is atypical in conformation with the hump, appears to have a longer barrel, and has somewhat lighter muscling down the back. The Brahman breed is recognized as a warm-to-hot climate breed because of their ability to tolerate high heat loads, thus Brahman crossbred feeder cattle are preferred in southwestern feedlots and in hot-humid and hot-arid climates. The crossbreeding merit of the Brahman has helped establish its role in United States beef production. The Brahman is a beef breed known principally for its crossbreeding merit and adaptability to harsh climates.
