ABSTRACT

Angus breed females were selected because high-quality animals were available and their maternal traits were desirable for our planned program. American Brahman breed sires were selected to maximize heterosis. Brahman bulls were purchased from the Wharton, Texas, and area. The bulls were good representatives of the American Brahman breed. Three bulls were selected for performance, disposition, and type from a group of 87 bulls that were gain tested and performance evaluated. The bulls were good representatives of the American Brahman breed. During the period of development, from weaning until breeding, average daily gains of the performance-selected group were 17.4% greater than those of the "auction" group. The herd producing Angus heifers had 14 year of performance selection to its credit, and all of the purchased heifers were sired by purebred Angus bulls that had excelled in performance tests. The actual weaning weight of the group was 489 lb; their adjusted 205-day weight was 470 lb.
