ABSTRACT

The cost of a Lutalyse program obviously varies depending on cost of the components. Estrus can be managed with the dairy heifer using any of the Lutalyse management schemes outlined for beef cattle. This chapter addresses vitally important consideration in annual and total milk yield per cow—the calving interval. Artificial inseminations (AI) at inappropriate times after calving have resulted from poor estrus detection method leading to less than maximum milk production. A key component contributing to the profitability of any dairy enterprise is milk production. Use of Lutalyse will allow for efficient AI of heifers, and AI in heifers with semen from appropriate predicted difference bulls will allow for more effective increases in milk production in the herd. Lutalyse®Sterile Solution can be an effective adjunct to managing the postpartum dairy cow to achieve a 12-mo to 13-mo calving interval or to achieve the calving interval most acceptable for an individual herd.
