ABSTRACT
Artificial insemination (AI) is probably one of the best tools available today for the cow-herd owner, either commercial or purebred, who wants to improve his cow herd and increase his net profits. AI techniques make it possible to use the best bulls of the breed, no matter what size herd livestock producers own. Good heat detection is a must in any AI program. Many people use a detector animal as an aid in heat detection, but these animals are really unnecessary. To develop good heat detection techniques, livestock producers should develop a system of checking that disturbs the herd as little as possible. Some signs indicate that a cow is just starting to come into heat, some will tell livestock producers that she is presently in heat, and some will tell their that cow was in heat a few hours ago and is ready to be inseminated.
