ABSTRACT

The responsibility of a farm manager is management of resources that include land, people, facilities, capital, livestock, and climate. The cattle resource in a humid, high-rainfall area requires a higher level of management than does that in a dry, low-rainfall area. Carrying capacity of the pastures is much greater, which results in cattle being more concentrated. This raises the exposure to disease and internal parasites. The production capability of the river-bottom land is too great to be planted to grass and grazed by cows in a cow-calf operation. The best use of this land for situation has been a dual use for wheat for both grazing calves and harvesting. The wheat is planted in early September to allow maximum growth in the fall. It is then grazed until March, when the decision is made to continue grazing or to move the cattle off in order to harvest grain later.
