Biennial thistles can be effectively controlled with picloram (0.13–0.5 lb ai/A), dicamba (05–2.0 lb ai/A), 2,4-D (15–2.0 lb ai/A), 2,4-D + dicamba (1.0 + 0.5 lb ai/A), dicamba + picloram (0.5–1.0 + 0.13–0.25 lb ai/A), and picloram + 2,4-D (0.13 + 0.25 lb ai/A). Metsulfuron (0.3 oz ai/A) and chlorsulfuron (0.75 oz ai/A) will control musk thistle and plumeless thistle is controlled by chlorsulfuron. Chlorsulfuron for plumeless thistle control and the auxinic herbicides for all biennial thistles should be applied when weeds are in the rosette growth stage. Metsulfuron or chlorsulfuron for musk thistle control should be applied when the weed is in the bolting to bud growth stages.
