ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the preliminary results of the efforts to develop a Knowledge-Based Expert System (KBES) for agroforestiy. The process of developing KBES, known as knowledge engineering, includes several distinct steps. The effort serves to bring to the attention of agroforestry research scientists the type of field data that will need to be generated in order to use such data with decision-making tools such as KBESs. Agroforestry is a collective name for land use systems in which woody perennials are deliberately grown on the same piece of land as agricultural crops and/or animals either in some form of spatial arrangements or in sequence. In agroforestry systems, the woody component interacts ecologically and economically with the crop and/or animal components. Alley cropping is a type of agroforestry system in which leguminous trees are planted in rows with food crops cultivated between them.
