ABSTRACT

Many Africans have studied range management and livestock production and are filling administrative and technical positions relating to range management. This chapter discusses some constraints on range livestock development, the role of range management advisors and an approach to development assistance in range management. The role of a range management advisor is to help people make better decisions. The advice given mast is ecologically, economically and culturally sound. Ideally a range advisor should help host country nationals initiate a management strategy that will help accelerate the adoption of improved management practices. Efforts to improve management practices are most effective when they establish a dialogue between technicians and pastoralists. Leaders within herder groups must be given the opportunity and time necessary to incorporate innovations within their group's perception of management alternatives. Universities worldwide are increasing their expertise and preparedness to provide assistance to less developed countries in natural resource management.
