ABSTRACT

Small farms in the tropics often produce inadequate amounts of high quality protein foodstuffs needed for good health, especially for children and pregnant women. A principal constraint to expanded goat enterprises is the amount of feed produced from the limited land area available on smallscale farms, which currently emphasize food crop and cash crop production. The baseline survey data included information on household composition, description of land and crops, numbers and use of buildings, livestock numbers, and other capital resources. Grazing on unimproved land provided the majority of energy and protein for the ruminants. On-farm noncropped land provided approximately 6,447 Mcal DE annually. Livestock represent an important component of small farms in Western Kenya. Goats were of the small East African breed but were only found on one farm in Kakamega as they are considered difficult to control and keep out of crops.
