ABSTRACT
An awareness of the importance of coconut/cattle enterprises is growing in many countries and will probably continue. The Coconut Research Institute (CRI) started its coconut/pasture research program in the early 1950s. The CRI research on pastures and cattle under coconuts and intercropping with food and cash crops provides a sound basis for government development efforts in the Coconut Triangle. The College of Agriculture of the University of the Philippines at Los Banos has worked with various aspects of the coconut/pasture/cattle system, which is called "coco-beef" in that country. In 1974, the 14th South Pacific Conference agreed to give top priority in its Economic Development Program to production of cattle under coconuts. The Department of Agriculture is conducting pasture research, with special emphasis being given to screening pasture legumes and grasses for coconut lands in the different ecological zones of the islands.
