ABSTRACT

Food security is a necessary though not Sufficient condition for the success of civilization. Ancient civilizations rose and fell based upon their ability to maintain a secure, stable food supply. Conceptually, the problem of food security has been with us at least since Malthus. The frightening possibility that food supplies might outstrip population growth return-to taunt people at least once every decade. In contrast, in the United States (US) agricultural production has outstripped population growth for at least a century. Food security has at least three dimensions: the first of these is availability, having enough food available for the entire population at all times to sustain human life. Seeds riot utilized in production are stored in government-sponsored germ plasm banks. In the past, agricultural labor was evenly distributed across the nation. In addition, the US highway system is in need of major repair. In particular, the off federal-aid system of rural county roads is deteriorating.
