ABSTRACT

Long-term food security for the world cannot be connected to non-renewable resources such as fossil fuels and mined minerals. Before On The Origin Of Species was published in 1859, the world of the professional biologist stood before him like a large post office. The preserved and living plants and animals arriving from around the globe in crates and boxes at the docks and depots of such places as London, Munich, Paris, and Cambridge were eventually sorted into what were regarded as the proper slots by the museum biologists of the time. Population biology is the product, primarily, of three traditions of biology, all of which go back to a synthesis of the work of Mendel and Darwin. It has drawn heavily on the traditions of the biosystematicist, the population ecologist, and the physiological ecologist. Many crops are planted at a certain time to avoid the peak of an annual insect infestation.
