ABSTRACT

"Agriculture in Transition," is one which first and foremost concerns countries of the Third World. An analysis of this subject must cover several dimensions which, in practice, are interwoven all the time, but for analytical purposes can only be presented separately. Many aspects are involved, such as demography and growth in production as well as rather common features which one finds in third world countries. In addition, in the majority of the developing countries, agriculture is the biggest contributing activity to the gross domestic product. Agriculture has a pervasive role in the national economies of most of the developing countries. Having established the importance of agriculture to developing countries, it is fitting to examine their performance in this regard. A simple reflection will show that if the figures were to represent a trend extending into the future, the emerging picture would be frightening.
