ABSTRACT

In the case of a beeswax candle, the lines of nonlinear, resonant ir energy visible on an infrared spectograph are very close to those shown by molecules of the cabbage looper moth's sex pherome as it luminesces under the stimulation of low intensity blue-ultraviolet night sky. Experiments with ant semiochemicals have shown that certain far infrared lines from a candle flame also duplicate emissions from ant semiochemicals in the 20 µ to 60 µ region of the far infrared spectrum. Place the candle in the center of the paper. Measure and mark a distance of 50 cm from the candle to serve as students' release point. Sir John Lubbock, of course, was utilizing candles in his work as a source of light for the simple reason that there was no electric light system in existence. Many insects are attracted to artificial light. That insects are attracted to various chemicals is also well known.
