ABSTRACT

Mason Dixon Farms proclaims itself to be a "family farm" but not like one that most people envision. The size and scope of our dairy farm requires a more intense management as compared to the average family farm of a father, his son, and maybe an outside nonfamily employee or two. Our management covers everything: raising and harvesting the crops for forage; feeding, caring, and milking the dairy herd; processing and packaging the end product—grade A fluid milk. Three different families and three generations are involved in the ownership and management of such an operation. Twenty-five family members are employed along with twenty-five nonfamily people—for the most part on a fulltime basis. The business is incorporated for the primary purpose of continuous ownership from one generation to the next. Ownership and full-time employment by family members are requirements for being a part of the management and decision-making team.
