ABSTRACT

Dairymen engaged in the breeding and sale of purebred cattle may discover that a longer calving interval is just as profitable through the sale of breeding animals produced by embryo transfer. Vaccination can often prevent reproductive diseases that cause abortion or infertility. Best results have been obtained by using sound breeding donor cows with no history of reproductive problems. The monthly or bimonthly herd visit is scheduled with a herd health reminder card. The vaccinations used in people practice are classified as routine vaccinations recommended for all herds and optional vaccinations used on selected herds. Cows fresh more than 2 weeks are infused with a 30 to 120 cc antibiotic or iodine mixture if there is an increased volume of fluid in the uterus or a purulent discharge. Donor cows are flushed about 60 to 90 days postpartum and may be flushed a second time in 40 days.
