ABSTRACT

This chapter presents some of the climate and weather modification schemes that have been discussed seriously since 1900, especially during times of prolonged meteorological and agricultural droughts and dry spells in the arid and semiarid regions in Africa. There are many who believe that technological advancements or technology transfer will resolve many of the environmental problems faced by inhabitants and governments in Africa. Weather and climate modification schemes relating to a change in vegetative cover are based on the assumption that there exist feedback interactions between the biosphere and the atmosphere. Weather and climate modification may prove to be a long-term solution for the development and reclamation of potentially arable land in the Sahara and Sahel as well as for other regions in Africa. There has been growing interest in the potential uses of precipitation augmentation in general, and specifically for rain-deficient regions of the world such as the Sahel.
