ABSTRACT

The state of education and training regarding cannabis as therapy for healthcare professionals in the United States varies widely by specialty and by state. Within the medical community, education often lags behind policy. While the process of cultivating specific cannabis strains and converting cannabis plants into a variety of products is well established, many growers and dispensary staff members rely on anecdotal data or personal experience when it comes to recommending products to medical patients or recreational consumers. Manufacturers of cannabis medications and pro-cannabis sources often make claims that are not backed by current research, and patients who look for information online or rely on media coverage of cannabis medicine can easily be misinformed as to the risks and benefits. Even when working directly with healthcare professionals, it can be difficult for patients to find a physician or other healthcare professional who is well educated when it comes to cannabis as medicine.
