ABSTRACT

Avocado (Persea Americana Mill.) is an important fruit worldwide. It is mainly produced in Central America and its market is constantly expanding. Like most species, the avocado tree has suffered the impact of climate change on the planet, which directly affects its cultivation. This has been causing changes in the regions of production, in the amount of fruit produced and in its economic value. In recent years, there has been a trend towards an intensification of extreme weather events in avocado-producing areas, especially in the distribution of rainfall and in the increase in temperatures. Thus, part of these areas are becoming unsuitable for production, while new regions have begun to present favourable climatic conditions. This is causing a migration and is redrawing the map of the fruit producing regions. In addition, in the face of intense climatic adversities, farmers have invested in technology to guarantee the harvest. Consequently, these readjustments imply the final price of avocados, compromise food security, in addition to limiting the access of people with lower purchasing power to the fruit. Given the above, this book chapter brings an approach to the impact of climate change on avocado cultivation, as well as the prospects for the production of this fruit in this scenario.
