ABSTRACT

Jujube, Ziziphus jujuba Mill., is a fruit tree that is cultivated in China for over 3000 years. China owned the largest production and exportation of jujube fruit around the world. As for a long history, jujube is utilized as a dry or fresh fruit. Traditional jujube grown distributes around the Yellow River in eastern China. However, the increasing rainfalls resulted from the changing climates have significantly influenced jujube cultivation. Obviously, a revolution of jujube industry ‘from east to west’ has rapidly developed in China in recent twenty years. In 2017, Xinjiang Autonomous Region, the westernmost province of China, has become the largest producing region, possessing approximately 48.91% of national yield of dried fruit. Meanwhile, the areas of traditional grown regions have reduced by 56.67%. In near future, an increasing pattern of ‘wide-row planting in lower density’ will be popular for dried fruit grown, making a moderate yield (7500 Kg·ha-1) and a higher quality. Besides, protected cultivation, including both the warm Heli greenhouses and cold sheds, to against fruit cracking induced by rainfalls, will further improve the fresh jujube industry. Moreover, the protected cultivation will also extend the harvest and market-cycling time with better qualities.
