ABSTRACT

Agricultural sector plays vital role in the livelihood, food security and economic development for the majority of the world. Sustainable agriculture and food systems are important in achieving the Millennium Development Goals that targeted no poverty, zero hunger and clean water and sanitation. However, agriculture, and food security are threatened by climate change. This chapter describes the impact of climate change on agriculture, and food systems activities including food production, processing, distribution and consumption at global, regional and country levels and its ultimate impact on food security pillars: availability, accessibility, utilization and stability. It also shed lights on the contribution of agriculture to global warming through the production of greenhouse gases emissions. Additionally, the global contribution of fruits to the kilocalories, protein and fat supply; as well as, fruits’ footprint of land use, fresh water withdrawal, greenhouse gases and Eutrophying emissions were covered.
