ABSTRACT

Cloud-based technology (CBT) has experienced intensive growth over the past decade, primarily thanks to the development of the Internet of things (IoT), as well as of the concept of Industry 4.0 (I4.0). At the moment, this growth is accelerating due to the expansion of the domain of this technology application – smart factory, smart cities, smart grid – tending to smart everything. Therefore, it can be stated that I4.0 represents both smart networking of machines, humans, processes, and things in manufacturing, on the basis of CBT. This chapter considers the basic elements of cloud computing, with special reference to cloud manufacturing (CM) in the context of I4.0.
