ABSTRACT

Plants can be distinguished according to their life cycle as annuals, biennials, and perennials. The success stories of mistletoe, periwinkle, and yew that became drugs in the first line of treatment of various cancers are remarkable. Additionally, many plant species have shown activity against cancer, and many others are promising for future use. Roots serve to anchor a plant and to facilitate the uptake of water and mineral salts. The flower is a thickened shoot which carries the reproductive parts of the plant. Its individual parts can be interpreted as modified leaves. The perianth consists either of perianth segments or of sepals and petals. Leaves can have different shapes, which often serve as taxonomic characters. They are distinguished in simple leaves with undivided blade and compound leaves, consisting of several separate leaflets.
