ABSTRACT

Vocational and technical education as vocational and technical education is abbreviated in Taiwan. The contribution of the development of vocational and technical education to Taiwan’s economic development has made it highly recognized in the world, especially in Asia, but its existing problems and crises have received less attention. Taiwan’s vocational and technical education has gone through four stages: system formation, system maturity, system crisis, and system transformation. In this process, there are always path dependence phenomena. One is that the supply of vocational and technical education meets the needs of economic development and depends on authoritative system guidance; the other is that vocational and technical education’s development path, as a subcategory of school education, always depends on the common mode of school education development. Vocational and technical education, which has sprung up widely in the mainland of China, should mirror the institutional changes of Taiwan’s vocational and technical education in order to avoid the integration of vocational and technical colleges into the general higher education sequence in the competitive development.
