ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a potential and status of emerging energy alternatives in Malaysia which contributes towards the sustainable development of the nation. Energy has a great impact on the socio-economic development of any country. Malaysia has an abundance of renewable energy assets in the form of biomass, biogas, wind, mini-hydro and solar energy; however, a lot of these renewable resources have not been properly exploited. Biomass stands out as a critically important source of renewable energy in Malaysia. There are five main biomass sources in Malaysia: oil palm, wood, rice, sugarcane, and metropolitan waste. Municipal solid waste, more commonly known as trash or garbage is a waste type that predominately includes household waste and also a portion from the industrial and commercial sector. Wind energy converts kinetic energy of wind into mechanical or electrical energy and then changes to mechanical energy through the rotor.
