ABSTRACT

Sustainable future can be ensured only through reduction in the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which requires reduction in fossil fuel burning and generation of energy through renewable energy sources. The promotion of renewable energy generation can be the best alternative for fulfilling the growing energy demand without much increase in the amount of GHG. The Indian Government began making policies for the wind energy sector way back in 1994—95 through its Department of Non-conventional Energy Sources in the Ministry of Power. The act provides the way for policy formulation by Government of India and mandates the State Electricity Regulatory Commission to promote and implement the policy formulated for renewable energy generation. Generation-based incentives promote the entry of large independent power producers and foreign direct investment in the wind energy sector. National Institute of Wind Energy is a national institution for wind energy research and development activities established in Chennai by Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
