This chapter deals with aspects of education for sustainable development in the context of higher education. Following the literature review, the authors address some critical issues that have arisen from the need to build well-designed frameworks, based on social constructivist pedagogical and smart learning approaches, advocated in the need for authentic educational communities through real-world problems. Thus, a conceptual framework linked to an interdisciplinary approach of STEM epistemology is proposed, aligning project-based learning with various instructional strategies to enhance knowledge in authentic settings. The framework serves as a basis and evidence for the implementation, integration, and consolidation of academic programs of sustainable development, enhancing key professional research and problem-solving sustainability competencies of graduates.
