ABSTRACT

The work “Periodic table” is based on a TEM microscopic picture showing early γ’ -precipitations in the superalloy Waspaloy (Patrick Majerus, Masters thesis, 1999). The creative process started with an idea of a garden that only slowly reveals its secrets, through smooth transitions from the microscopic to an imaginary real world. The link to science goes via chemistry where all the known elements have their well-defined place within the different groups of elements. The background was painted using acrylic wet-in-wet. The branches follow the shadows of the original nanostructure. The y’ precipitations were then drawn as fruits of the trees, representing at the same time chemical elements, their symbol being indicated on each. Every group of elements (e.g. nonmetals, noble gases) is further painted in a different color. We finally see a nano-chemical garden.
