ABSTRACT

The corrosion resistance imparted to grit-blast 7075-T6 and 2024-T3 aluminum by various silane coupling agents was investigated as a function of silane type and concentration of the silane in the depositing solution. Strong differences were observed, with 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) exhibiting the best improvement. A series of wedge test (ASTM D3762) specimens were then prepared to determine if the improved corrosion resistance led to improved moisture resistance for adhesive bonds. The results showed that MPS gave significantly improved performance over the commonly used 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane.
