ABSTRACT

Today it is a common finding that stormwater runoff of urban and interurban roads are non-point source pollution which actually contribute to the degradation of water quality of water bodies, ground or surface. In particular, the fact that the runoff can transfer solid particulates, heavy metals, chlorides etc. has a result the degradation of ecosystems. Taking into account the fact that water pollution has impacts to people as well as to flora and fauna, it is an imperative need to take measures for facing this environmental problem. This paper examines the framework concerning the management of water bodies pollution from interurban roads runoff. In particular, measures, which must be included in an integrated pollution management programme at the level of river basin, are examined. Finally, measures are proposed for the establishment or the improvement of guidelines for the respective studies.
