ABSTRACT

The supramolecular chemistry is in the central part of the bottom-up approaches to nanoscience and nanotechnology. Basically, to be able to build nanosystems from the building molecules, we should know how to control the noncovalent bond, specifically the intermolecular interactions. This branch of science is highly interdisciplinary and is mostly concerned with advancing structural complexity such as inclusion complexes, molecular recognitions, crystal engineering, and self-assembly. Jin Yong Lee was born in 1969 in Koryong, Korea. He graduated from POSTECH, Korea in 1992, and obtained his Ph.D. degree in 1997 at POSTECH under the supervision by Professor Kwang S. Kim. Manabu Sugimoto was bom in 1965 in Hokkaido, Japan. He finished his Ph.D. course in 1993 and obtained his Ph.D. degree in 1996 from Kyoto University (Japan) under the supervision of Prof. Hiroshi Nakatsuji. The thesis was concerned with quantum chemical studies on NMR chemical shifts of metal nuclei in coordination compound.
