ABSTRACT

We report a molecular dynamics simulation of the thin-film growth in dip-pen nanolithography. For a thiol monolayer on a gold substrate, increasing the molecule-substrate binding strength enhances the molecular deposition rate and makes the thin-film circular and well-ordered. Exchange, instead of hopping, is the primary mechanism of the molecular diffusion on the substrate. The monolayer growth is faster than predicted from the diffusion theory.
