ABSTRACT

The cell models are usually accepted for analysing the fluid flow through a solid particle assemblage using spherical shaped cells. When particles are associated with vortex in the wake, the simple geometric configuration with a spherical particle at the centre of a cell demands careful scrutiny. This paper examines the most important factor for the cell configuration: the location of a solid sphere in the spherical cell. Numerical analysis suggests that the central position is suitable only for the nearly creeping flow past the solid particle with significant fore-aft symmetry of the flow field.
