ABSTRACT

Geoscience information system is foundation of geoscience modernization and a very important part of national informatization infrastructure. Development of geoscience information system within MGMR started in the end of 1970’s. During the longer than 20 years, a number of geoscientific databases in various fields are built up; A Computerized Mineral Exploration and Evaluation System(KPX) and Computer Aided Editing and Publishing System for Color Geoscience Maps - MAPCAD are developed in house, and are distributed and used all over the country, not only in MGMR, but in many other ministries. MAPCAD makes the whole procedure of color map publishing, from digitizing, editing, processing, proofing, color separating until output of plate film, be computerized on PC. It has achieved remarkable success in changing traditional working way; MAPGIS, as a general and powerful GIS tool software, also are developed in house and has been released. Several pilot research projects of GIS application with MAPGIS, including mineral resources evaluation, water resources evaluation, geological Hazard, geological cartography, land use and so on, are underway.

The paper consists of two parts. Part one is about the state and features of geoscience information systems, part two is development of the systems in the future.
