ABSTRACT
The JAFOV is the database composing about 4, 500 descriptive data on the vertebrate fossil specimens deposited in Japan. It has been constructed since 1982, and stored at Kyoto University Data Processing Center, Kyoto, Japan, as an on-line database using a mainframe computer. It is, however, not easy to use and difficult to serve images in this system. So we tried to apply the WWW technique to improve those problems. The WWW is well known as a veiy functional way to serve various kinds of multimedia information on the Internet and as providing excellent user interface. In this study, we developed a prototype of new JAFOV service system using WWW technique for serving it on the Internet. Consequently, we confirmed that the new system is suitable for serving such kind of database as JAFOV.
