ABSTRACT

A computer simulation technique was developed to obtain an exact solution of the motion of a dislocation in a concentrated random array of solute atoms. From the data obtained in this investigation, the size effect is the major factor in solid solution strengthening. To properly include the effect of modulus would require a synergistic simulation of combined size and modulus terms. With the size effect alone and if the line tension is set equal to 0.5 μb2, as is generally assumed, then the following expression can be obtained for the yield stress τ at 0 K: τ = K μ ε4/3 c1/2, K is a constant equal to 0.0694 and is not an adjustable parameter.
