ABSTRACT
This article gives an overview over the basic concepts of liquid crystals, including most recent developments, such as bent-core mesogens, polyphilic molecules and liquid quasicrystals. It is based on a chemist's point of view, discussing the concepts leading to the formation of different supramolecular structures depending on the architecture of the molecular building blocks, whereas purely physical aspects and theories are not discussed in detail.
