ABSTRACT

This study introduces intelligent all-way stop control system utilizing intelligent transport systems (ITS) technologies to enhance efficiency and safety at unsignalized intersections. An operational and functional concept of intelligent all-way stop controlled intersection is demonstrated based on the intelligent system utilizing loop detectors, LED traffic signs, and a controller specifically designed for right of ways assignments. A prototype and warrants related to traffic volumes for the implementation of intelligent all-way stop control system are presented in this study with a detail procedure and guidelines for the revisions of the roadway and/or traffic law in Korea. Findings from this study suggest that the proposed intelligent all-way stop control system would be implemented in improving both efficiency and safety at unsignalized intersections with the goal of higher driver compliance towards stopping at the intersection and having the right of ways.
