ABSTRACT

Amkatwende—loosely translated—means, "Get up and go!" in Kiswahili and is the name of an agricultural cooperative for HIV-positive people. Perhaps this is a good glimpse at what the program described in this chapter embodies: it is the message for HIV-positive individuals who had little or no hope in years past; it is the message for numerous Kenyans—physicians and others—who want to "make a difference," as one of the founders often says; it is the message for westerners who come to serve and learn; since the devastation and displacement following the elections of December 2007, it is the message to staff and patients that AMPATH, our program, will survive: Get up and go!
