ABSTRACT

This chapter helps the people to understand their natural teaching style and consider how to adapt it to various learners’ needs to help them progress from being dependent to self-directed learners. An effective teacher does not just impart knowledge and skills, but does so in a way that engages learners and leaves them with a deeper understanding and ability to interpret that freshly gained knowledge, or to apply those new skills. Extraverts prefer less structured situations, so the all-around flexible and adaptable teaching style should be suitable for these learners. The all-round flexible and adaptable teaching style should suit learners from a range of backgrounds and with various levels of knowledge and skills, as the people vary their style and content to match their needs and preferences. The SSDL model describes a progression of stages, but the progress of a learner or class will rarely be linear, and most classes will contain learners at different stages of self-direction.
