      ABSTRACT

Metals and alloys have been used as structural materials for centuries. With the advancement in the field of material science, and the increasing restrictions in logistics and space, engineers and researchers have been continuously developing high-performance materials for various applications. Shape memory materials (SMM) exist in austenite and martensite phases with three distinct crystal structures: austenite in face centered cubic (FCC), twinned martensite in alternatively shear platelet structure, and detwinned or deformed martensite. Transformations among these crystal structures take place in response to changes in the external environment, such as stress, temperature, pressure, or magnetic field. Surface integrity is the sub-surface condition of any component manufactured by any process. It includes not only the topological aspects of the manufactured surface but also its physical, chemical, metallurgical, mechanical and biological aspects.
