ABSTRACT

This paper presents a computational modeling method, which incorporates discrete element method (DEM) and time series analysis technique, to predict the deformation in blocky rock slopes. In combination with time series analysis of data obtained from the field measurements, DEM is improved and it can be applied to displacement and time prediction. A transformation function, which can be determined by the displacement fitting approach, is defined to link the two modeling methods. Based on both observation data and rock physical and mechanical parameters, the coupled computational modeling method would be expected to be more accurate. Model application to the analysis and prediction of the deformation in Lianziya slope located in Three Gorges of Changjiang River of China is also discussed in detail in the paper.
