ABSTRACT

Assessment is primarily concerned with the measurement of student performance, whereas evaluation is generally understood to refer to the process of obtaining information about an educational programme for subsequent judgment and decision-making. Evaluations can involve measuring student performance as a source of information, although it requires student testing both pre- and post-course. The initial stage of evaluation is where the institutions or individuals responsible for a programme take the decision to evaluate it. Activities that may be evaluated include the work undertaken by a teacher with his or her students, a curriculum or postgraduate course, an entire curriculum or even national programmes. An important dimension to consider is whether the evaluation is to be formative or summative. Formative evaluation is undertaken during the course of a programme with a view to adjusting the materials or activities as the programme proceeds.
