ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book describes the various models of integrated care commonly found within paediatric gastroenterology clinical practice settings. It looks at the application of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for recurrent abdominal pain and reviews the strong evidence base and outlines the core components of a CBT programme. The book highlights the application of the social–ecological model to assess social–family–environmental contributory factors, and presents intervention strategies from a social learning perspective. It also reviews the literature on physiological and psychological factors in the rare condition of rumination syndrome. The book focuses on young people with coeliac disease, as Howard and Urquhart-Law consider its impact on psychological well-being and quality of life. It discusses various aspects of tube-feeding and tube-weaning feeding therapy. The book also presents a powerful case for listening to, and learning from, the patient.
