ABSTRACT

Photodecarboxylation (PDC) is an important fundamental photoreaction that has signicance in many areas of chemistry. PDC is responsible for the in vivo decomposition of many pharmaceuticals, including several nonsteroidal anti-inammatory drugs (NSAIDS).1-3 PDC reactions have found application in organic synthesis, particularly in the production of “disciplined radicals” by PDC of Barton esters4-6 and in the photodecarboxylative addition reactions of Griesbeck and Oelgemöller.7-10 Œe photodegradation of many organic compounds can be carried out through photocatalytic PDC reactions such as the photo-Kolbe reaction,11,12 and similar reactions can be used to initiate polymerization reactions.13
